SUMMARY An updated review is presented about the information provided by genetic studies in relation to the conformation of the gene pool of the current Venezuelan population and about the miscegenation ideology questions raised in particularly relevant historical sources, within a framework that could underpin the findings of genetic studies. The latter have generated information on the genetic composition of the Venezuelan population and reveal that, as in other Latin American countries, the process of conquest and colonization resulted in very heterogeneous populations, many of them with subpopulations that demonstrate how complex the conformation process and historical development of the American peoples has been. Furthermore, heterogeneity is also observed in relation to the origin of the different genomes: the autosomal one is predominantly European with ah important contribution of American Indian, the mtDNA is mainly Amerindian, while the Y chromosome is European. The first major conclusion is that it is not possible to generalize when talking about ethnicity of the Venezuelan population (excluding indigenous peoples). Genetic studies are confirming that Venezuela is a mestizo country, a perception that is present in the general population since the colonial period and has remained in the mind of many Venezuelan historians and intellectuals. The foundalions of the ideology of miscegenation in Venezuela show that it is an amalgam country, a country of mestizos in the blood, the mentality and the culture.
